Medical Standards & Certification Guide
STC-SA Clinic delivers accredited maritime and occupational health medicals aligned with the regulations that govern safe deployment at sea, offshore and on site.
Maritime & Offshore Requirements
Maritime examinations are completed by a SAMSA-accredited medical practitioner and assessed against the requirements relevant to your vessel, employer, flag state or offshore project. The clinic supports routine and project-specific medicals for seafarers and offshore personnel.
International Maritime Standards
Medical assessments follow South African Maritime Safety Authority requirements, the STCW Convention 1978 as amended, the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, and the Merchant Ships (Minimum Standards) Convention 1976. The Merchant Shipping Regulations 2013, as amended, also inform the fitness requirements applied to seafarers.
Offshore & Flag-State Acceptance
Where required, the clinic provides OEUK/OGUK accredited and MCA approved examinations, alongside SAMSA medicals with additional employer, vessel or project-specific tests. Confirm your client or employer requirements when booking so the correct assessment can be scheduled.
Occupational Health Requirements
Construction and industrial medicals are conducted in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and the Construction Regulations of 2014. Assessments establish fitness for role-specific work, including work at heights and work in confined spaces, and include the testing required to support a sound occupational fitness decision.
What the Examination Covers
Your appointment may include a physical examination, urine screening and compulsory drug testing, audiogram, lung function testing, and far, near, colour and depth-perception vision tests. Chronic conditions can be monitored and referrals made where clinically necessary. Maritime candidates receive the relevant SAMSA certification; occupational candidates receive Annexure 3 Fitness Certification signed by an Occupational Medical Practitioner.
